Openings

 

    The opening and the title card of a movie or show can have a major impact on the mood of the film be it if people would want to watch it or to establish a mindset while you watch the movie, such as creating an upbeat or energetic opening for your show to then create a somber and depressing film. I will be discussing several films and their openings and title cards how they made me feel.

Openings

    

• Souleater op 1 

• Soul Eater has a very unique and energetic opening with the music choice having a unique sound that would only fit with the atmosphere and vibe of the show. Throughout the opening, it had displayed various characters that are relevant to the plot of the show to show the importance they have on the show. Another thing done in the opening was the foreshadowing or hinting of events in the story that would occur much later on. The title card for Soul Eater was very interesting with the design with the letters of “SOUL EATER” being capitalized to show the boldness of the characters and the show, as well as the small face being commonplace in many of the designs of the characters and the show itself. This title card was interesting had engaged me in the show as I was very interested in the world it was attempting to display.

• Breaking Bad 

•  The Breaking Bad opening is very simple and basic but it fits what the show is about perfectly, with the show having a major motif about drugs and their creation. The opening of the show uses different chemical compounds in the background and then uses two elements to spell out the name of the show. This title card is simple and impactful and creates a sensation of mystery when I had watched the show and engaged me to continue watching the show.







• Vinland Saga

• The opening for Vinland Saga is very impactful and heavily expresses many of the major and underlying themes of the show. The choice of music being a very alternative form of Japanese Rock mean to show the contrast or how unapproachable the characters of the show are portrayed, with this show being about Vikings and their lifestyle. Throughout the opening, it had shown the gruesome and brutal battles that they had been fighting in throughout their lives which is very reflective of what occurs in the show. There were also many frames in which they show the main character’s family which plays a big role in his story and why his story had even started. The title card had a great design with part of the name being a sword to show the rampant violence and war that is put on display in this show. As I see the title card it makes me excited to watch the show and learn more about the story.

• Narcos

• The Narcos opening is an opening that perfectly displays the culture of the Narcotraficantes “drug traffickers” of Colombia and the time period this was set in. This opening was meant to show the extravagant lifestyles of narcos and Pablo Escobar as well as showing the rampant repercussions of what he had done and how it affected so many people. The opening had given a retro feeling with the graphics used with the use of found footage throughout as well as the display of drugs. As I had watched the opening I was engaged further and was more excited to finally watch the show.

• Godzilla (2014)

• The recent adaptation of the Godzilla appearance was very interesting with its opening as it uses many historical events that did occur to potentially hint or make sense of what is going to happen in the movie with Godzilla, the opening of this movie is very interesting in my opinion as it makes more interested in what will happen in the movie with the various newspapers and documents had used of previous events that had occurred with Bikini Atoll having a large role with that place being very relevant to history due to the rampant use of nuclear weapons it this area. After watching this opening I was personally left with more questions about Godzilla being created because of humanity with the rampant rise of nuclear testing warfare. The title card of the film was very interesting as it was very minimalist with just simple text with dust or snow falling in the background
